The past month and a half has been a complete whirlwind. I launched my mobile app, Cocoa Swatches, on the last day of February and the positive response I’ve received since has been nothing short of amazing.
I knew that this type of project deserved the attention it received when I was creating it, but I could have never imagined that so many people would support it so quickly. (I am still in awe that Cocoa Swatches has been featured by the likes of Buzzfeed, Allure, and Teen Vogue.) It has always been my mission to support, uplift, and celebrate images of black women (especially women with darker complexions) in the media. I am so thankful that Cocoa Swatches has allowed me to do so. It brightens my entire day whenever someone tells me how much Cocoa Swatches has helped them or inspired them, or given them the confidence to express themselves through makeup.
I am truly doing something I absolutely love to do as my career and I couldn’t be more grateful. If someone told me I would occupy the title of “entrepreneur” 5 years ago..even 1 year ago, I wouldn’t have believed them. But, as I like to say nowadays, I didn’t chose the entrepreneur life, it chose me; the main reason being, I really and truly believe in my idea and I put in the time and work to make it happen (reason and unemployment be damned). And, fortunately enough, I have an amazing support system behind me, and have experienced some strokes of luck along the way.
I’m quite literally building my brand on a dollar and dream, but I know that it has so much potential to really impact society and help so many people.
And so, as the seasons change, I gladly accept my newfound title of entrepreneur, and look forward to making magic throughout the rest of this year. Cocoa Swatches is only gonna get more poppin’ y’all. Mark my words.
