I’ve been in sort of a funk lately. As graduation gets closer and closer, so does this impending pressure of having to decide what I’m going to do with my life. I’ve always envied those who’ve had a “dream job” in mind, because it enabled them to create a path to success that was measurable and made some kind of sense to them. It gave them attainable goals to strive for. But if you disregard that short period of time when I was 8 and I was adamant on becoming a singer just like Brandy, that’s never been the case for me. Hair has always been an extension of self-expression for black women. The textures and manifestations of black hair are so varied and so nuanced that the numberĀ of possibilities for hairstyles are endless.
One of the most popular ways to style black hair is using what is commonly referred to as a “protective style,” which can come alive as a weave or a wig. After years of practice, I am finally starting to get the hang of creating and styling these things (for myself at least!), so I decided to make a quick video with some tips & tricks for anyone interested in recreating one of my favorite protective styles : a curled crochet wig.
